The Wines!!

CEP Sauvignon Blanc, Hopkins Ranch , Russian River $24.99
The 2017 Cep Hopkins Sauvignon Blanc is excellent. The alluring nose emphasizes tart, green fruits (kaffir lime and other sour citrus) with savory notes of fennel, thyme, mint and tarragon. The fruit on the attack confirms the lime flavor in the nose adding lime pith and roasted lime nuances. The midpalate has salty and mineral notes as well as a hint of floral sweetness. The acidity is fresh throughout making the wine crisp and focused with a clean finish. Our best effort to date and one I hope we repeat next year. 650 cases

CEP Rose',
Hopkins Ranch , Russian River $24.99
The 2017 Cep Hopkins Rose is true to style emphasizing freshness and lift over weight and texture. The aroma leans towards watermelon water and unripe strawberries with a hint of cream (though it is made in 100% stainless steel). The fruit on the attack adds nectarines, ruby grapefruit, and apricot to flavors of watermelon. The midpalate has a little more roundness than the 2016 Cep Rose though the acidity is quite bright. The long finish leaves a salty tang with hints of rose water. A delicious, fresh rose perfect to pair or drink alone. 500 cases

Stix Chardonnay, Russian River $18.99
Russian River Valley Chardonnay typifies the soft, fruity, bright and crisp flavors that made the Russian River Valley famous for this varietal. The 2013 Chardonnay comes from three select vineyards in 2 distinctly different micro climates ranging from very cool in the Green Valley area to warmer days in the Russian River plain area. The gravelly soil associated with the Russian River provides minerality and structure to grapes. The resulting wine is a fantastic example of Chardonnay showcasing the effects of micro climates in the Russian River Valley. Our Chardonnay had 20% malolactic fermentation to help round out the edges while maintaining the crisp Russian River influence. Aromas of apples and citrus combined with a hint of French oak make this wine enjoyable by itself or with food.

Stix Cabernet Sauvignon $21.99
Chocolate and dark fruit notes on the bouquet, intense plum, blackberry, and cassis flavors emerging on the palate and finishing with hints of vanilla and cedar. Well balanced, complex Cabernet Sauvignon.

Mauritson Zinfandel, Dry Creek $32.99

92 Points The Wine Spectator
Sleek, focused and complex, this has floral raspberry and toasty spice aromas and layered flavors of black cherry, smoky sage and licorice that linger against lively tannins. Drink now through 2026. 2,419 cases made

The Beers!!

Commonwealth Mano Del Puma, Mexican Lager 4 pack $14.99
 4.8% ABV with 22 IBUs.
Odd name, it translates from Spanish into "human hand of the puma". Perhaps they meant "zarpa del puma" which means "the puma's paw". What's the Steve Martin Joke? "Boy, those French. They have a different word for everything!" I guess the Spanish do too! Anyway, it's a clear gold beneath a short head of white. The head retention is OK and there's some spotty lacing. The aroma is limited but displays some bready, lightly sweetish malt with just a suggestion of hops in the background. This is kind of a Mexican-style lager though, so you shouldn't expect anything more. The flavor then follows, and I'm a little surprised that Commonwealth would make a beer like this, it just doesn't seem to be their style, it's too simple. Maybe they're looking to sell more beer at the beach though, which would make sense. And just because it's a boring style doesn't mean it should be ignored or scored badly. It's nicely balanced, and really well polished. They know what they're doing over there and they've done it up right. Moderate bitterness, light-medium body, slightly less than standard level carbonation... just a basic golden lager really, although there must be some adjunct in use as it's not that grainy. On a hot day in the sun I'd say you could hardly turn this down.
