The Wine Club - Great Grapes of Austria

Tuesday, September 18, 2018

Time: 07:00pm - 08:30pm

Type: Class

Location: The Wine Cabinet

Once a month, promptly at 7:00 pm, we get together to examine an element of the wide world of wine. We sample 6 or 7 wines with the knowledgeable help of a winemaker, an importer, a distributor or one of our staff.

Kate prepares some culinary delights that match well with the wines we're trying or come from the region at hand. It's a relaxed evening with plenty of opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and develop new friends and broader palates.

The fee offsets the cost of the class and ranges from $25 to $50 per person, $40 to $75 per couple. We limit the attendance so that we can properly handle the event. Classes usually fill about a week before the event.

Call us at 703-668-WINE(9463) to reserve your seat!!

We'll kick off this year's Wine Club Series with an in depth look at the grapes that have made the Austrian wine production unique, driven by quality and one of the remarkable values on the world wide wine scene today.

Making up less than 1% of the total wine production on earth, Austrian wines have become a favorite with sommeliers, restaurateurs and your neighbor across the street.

Klaus Wittauer, our favorite Austrian wine importer will personally conduct the class in his inimitable fashion and share his deep knowledge and passion for what has become a staple of our offerings to the community.

Anton Bauer Roter Veltliner 2016 - Wagram
Medium green-yellow. Inviting notes of pineapple and Carambola (starfruit) laced withhoney comprise a subtle and multifaceted bouquet. Elegantly concentrated with pleasant fruit sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. Pineapple, apricot and minerals.

Heinrich Hartl Rotgipfler 2016 – Thermenregion

92 pts.
“Aromatic, ripe red apple and melon notes appear first on the nose but are underpinned by a savory streak of salty yeast. The palate brings the yeastiness to the fore, giving a lovely creamy texture. The finish is fresh but mellow.”     ANNE KREBIEHL MW

Tegernseerhof Grüner Veltliner Bergdistel 2017 Smaragd  - Wachau
The Bergdistel Smaragd® is a blend of the lower terraces of the different Cru’s in Loiben and Weissenkirchen. The combination of coolness, maturity and vitality of this Grüner Veltliner finishes in a shining elegance and full of finesse! Intense, concentrated wine, which packs spice, ripe pineapple and apricots and a final floral character that fills the mouth.

The result is one of the most elegant and balanced Smaragd® Grüner there is……

Steininger Loisium Riesling Steinhaus 2016 - Kamptal DAC Reserve
Dark golden yellow, ripe peaches, a touch of passion fruit, attractive richness and long finish with great minerality.  A classic Riesling with lots of aging potential.

Heinrich Hartl Pinot Noir Reserve 2014/15   - Thermenregion

92pts  2014  94pts/2015
“This is brooding on the nose with the allure of an elderberry aroma. The same note dominates the palate which has a smooth, sensuous body, still held tight by brisk, fine tannin and lively acidity. There is almost stealthy, surprising grip. With its ample fruit this is already enticing, but structure and freshness promise more pleasure to come.
Drink 2018–2028.”   ANNE KREBIEHL MW

Netzl Edles Tal  2015   - Carnuntum

60% Zweigelt, 30% Merlot and 10% Syrah
Named after the vineyard “Edles Tal”, which means “noble valley”.  A Zweigelt blend with new world influences, dark ruby garnet, fine nuances of spice, delicious fruit and well balanced. Pair with dark meat, lamb, beef or game. Also goes well with a selection of different kinds of cheeses.

Leo Hillinger Blaufränkisch Leithaberg DAC 2015   - Burgenland
The Leithaberg DAC has a dark ruby red with a black core. Ripe cherry, blackberry, graphite, licorice, and spicy notes. Fresh cherry-fruits on the plate, tight structure, but soft. A wine with elegant tannin, good acidity, dark berries and good spice on the long smooth finish. This wine matches more than perfectly to grilled steaks, lamb and venison.

Dessert Wine
Steindorfer Beerenauslese Cuvee Klaus 2015     - Burgenland

100% Pinot Blanc  - Liquid gold, this BA has an elegant nose with some honey and peach. It is complex and intense on the palate with juicy apricot and harmonious acidity on the finish, which lingers on and on.
