 Charlie Wagner's
Sea Sun

Califorina Chardonnay
2016

This is the inaugural release of this new Chardonnay from the Wagner family (makers of Caymus).
We are very pleased to offer you this beautiful wine.

Named after its big brother Mer Soleil, which in French means “the sea and sun” this wine is an overachiever right out of the gate!
If you love Wind Racer or Rombauer, then this is the wine for you!
Not yet rated but we anticipate high scores as we have come to expect from this iconic family.

Our Thoughts.........

A pale straw color, a subtle nose with scents of mango, soft butterscotch, just ripened pineapple and apricot. Hints of a springtime meadow, fresh sea air and a trace of smokiness add intriguing layers. On the palate is round and creamy, with flavors of lemon curd and brown spice on the mid-palate. Medium full to full bodied this wine’s fruit flavors, oak, and acidity are nicely integrated, with no one element standing out. The finish has a toasty quality, with notes of cinnamon and lemon squares with bright acidity.

About Sea Sun in their words…..
The “sea” is the Pacific Ocean, with its cooling breezes and gusts of wind. The “sun” is a balancing presence, its warmth shining down day after day. These two forces shape “Sea Sun,” a California Chardonnay whose character speaks to the unique terrain where it is grown near the coast – Santa Barbara County, Monterey County, and the little-known Solano County, where the land we farm bears the maritime influence of San Francisco Bay.

All three of these regions provide ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay, enjoying ample sun and coastal weather. We have been producing Chardonnay from both Monterey and Santa Barbara vineyards for some time and recently expanded into Suisun Valley – a hidden gem tucked within Solano County that is only a 40-minute drive from Napa Valley and has the potential to make extraordinary wine. We also grow Chardonnay near Suisun on land that lies in the San Francisco Bay appellation.

Our goal with Sea Sun is to combine the unique qualities of each of the premier regions where it is sourced. While Monterey, Santa Barbara and Solano Counties share a coastal climate, they span several hundred miles and feature subtle differences. Even a few degrees in temperature or the strength of the wind leave their mark on the grapes we grow for Sea Sun, enabling us to create layers of aromas and flavors. As a result, this wine offers something wholly distinct – a style that brings out all the best characteristics of Chardonnay with harmony and balance.

Charlie Wagner
Charlie Wagner is owner and winemaker for Mer Soleil winery in the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County. Making both Chardonnay and a recently released Pinot Noir under the Mer Soleil label, he is passionate about how these wines reflect the drama and rugged beauty of the California coast.

Charlie grew up in Rutherford and is named after his grandfather, Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner Sr., co-founder of Caymus Vineyards. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Charlie spent most of his spring and summer breaks working in the vineyards or the cellar at Caymus. At 16, he began his winemaking career in earnest when he was granted permission to spend some of his school days working in the family’s Mer Soleil vineyard in Monterey County.

After graduating from high school, Charlie worked alongside Jon Bolta, the winemaker for Conundrum White, apprenticing in every step of the vineyard and production process for the family’s white wines.  With the 2003 vintage, Charlie took over full production responsibilities for Mer Soleil Chardonnays. He not only oversees winemaking, but also continues the Wagner love of vineyard development and farming in California.

Charlie is also Director of Winemaking for Conundrum and has overseen the launch of three Conundrum wines, which now include a white, red, sparkling and rosé. Like his grandfather, he is passionate about breaking into new territory, and each Conundrum has a unique story and style. Charlie’s latest endeavor is the newly released Sea Sun Chardonnay, already creating a buzz in the industry.
When he’s not working, Charlie spends as much time as possible with his family, looking forward to future adventures with his two young sons, whether in the vineyard or on hiking and camping trips.
