The Wines

Artomaña Txakolina Xarmant Txakoli 2018, Artamano (Amurrio), Spain
This is an exciting blend of native Basque grapes: 70% Hondarrabi Zuri, 10% Izkiriota Ttippia, 10% Izkiriota, and 10% Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia.  Produced organically from old vines, most of which were planted in the early 1980s, this is a fizzy, zesty, playful wine.  The palate is bright, with searing acidity and brilliant citrus fruit.  It finishes dry, with light minerality and the barest hint of salinity.

Pares Balta Blanc de Pacs 2018, Barcelona, Spain
Certified Organic and Biodynamic, and woman owned. Blanc de Pacs is a blend of traditional cava grapes (Macabeau, Xarel-lo, Parallada), fermented dry and left still rather than sparkling.  The resulting wine is a fascinating collection of tropical fruit: mango, papaya, banana, passionfruit, and rich citrus.  This is the perfect pairing for sushi, thai food, or anything with a hint of heat to it.

Pares Balta Ros de Pacs 2018, Barcelona, Spain
Certified Organic and Biodynamic, and woman owned.  Ros de Pacs is a rich, robust example of rose, made from a very intentional blend of Garnacha, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.  The palate is intense, with peppered plums, strawberries, cranberries, red cherries, and a touch of tannin.  Pairs beautifully with salmon or goat cheese.

La Grena Joven Rioja 2017, Rioja, Spain
In the world of Rioja, most people think of bold reds with aggressive tannins and plenty of power. Rioja actually produces a wide variety of wines, including more demure reds such as this Joven.  Joven (meaning young) refers to a wine that has seen comparatively little aging.  That makes this is an ideal red for the height of summer. The great here is Tempranillo, and it brings a classic raspberry, strawberry, saddle leather profile to the palate. A perfect balance of tannin and acidity give this wine enough backbone to stand up to a steak while still making it appropriate for an evening spent on the patio.

Epifanio Tempranillo 2017, Ribera del Duero, Spain
Imagine a swirl of raspberries, cream, coconut, and chocolate.  This wine is exactly that. Made from Tempranillo and grown in the warm, sundrenched region of Ribera del Duero, Epifanio is aged in a blend of French and American oak, yielding nuanced vanilla spice, as well as lush, creamy coconut.  This is Spain’s answer to a big, California style red. Opulent, toothsome, and infinitely drinkable.
