The Wines!!
Santa Barbara Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi 2018 $14.99
On Italy’s less traveled Adriatic coast, in between Emilia-Romagna and Abruzzo, the Marche is relatively sparsely populated, and largely composed of gently rolling hills, green with agriculture, that end along steep limestone bluffs on the coast. This is the home of the Verdicchio grape, whose name comes from the root verde, describing both the greenish hue of the grapes and the resulting wine. The Castelli di Jesi DOC is one of the largest of the zones in which Verdicchio is grown, and surrounds the town of Jesi and its ancient fortifications. Verdicchio, also known as Trebbiano di Soave, has been cultivated in the Marche for many centuries. It is capable of making vibrantly fresh and crisp white wines that are a wonderful accompaniment to seafood.

Domaine Fontsainte Gris de Gris Rose 2019 $19.99
The vines sit on one of the sunniest spots of land in the appellation of Corbières, enjoying south-southeast exposure, and protection from the cold, northeast winds by a large 500-hectare forest. The cooler sea breezes from the Mediterranean help this sun-soaked terroir achieve balance as well. Like many of the vignerons that we work with, Bruno believes that “great wines are made in the vineyard” and less in the cellars. He farms the land sustainably and keeps treatments to a minimum. Their Gris de Gris Rose is one of the most highly sought after each year. The blend is a majority of the Grenache Gris grape with a bit of Carignan and Mourvedre.

Domaine Fontsainte Corbieres Rouge 2018 $16.99
The first vineyards at Domaine de Fontsainte, in the Corbières appellation, were planted by the Romans. The original domaine was built around a thermal spring, which was later named for the local, twelfth-century patron saint, Saint Siméon; hence Fontsainte—the saint’s fount. Their Corbieres Rouge is a blend of 60% Carignan, 30% Grenache and 10% Syrah.

La Quercia Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC 2015 $24.99
Antonio Lamona is the most humble rock-star we know. His basic Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a staple of our Small Vineyards Portfolio, and we are thrilled to present his Riserva. Aged in 50 hl Slavonian oak for 12 months, and an additional year in steel, the wine exudes wonderful character from the 40 year-old vines. Grown in the classic “tendone” (or tent) style, the plantings are pruned to produce about 2/3 of a bottle per plant (very low yields!).

Chateau Belles Graves Lalande de Pomerol 2016 $34.99
Situated in Lalande de Pomerol, just north of Pomerol, Belles-Graves produces Merlot-dominated wines with a lush, velvety texture and very fine tannins. The vineyards average forty years of age and are planted on slopes that descend to the east, south and west of the estate. Though they sit just across a small river from some of the famous estates of Pomerol, their greatness comes from their own terroir of varied clay and gravel where flint, quartz, and mica offer distinct mineral components to each parcel. Yields are kept low, the maceration is long, and the wines are never filtered. The final blend consists of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. The finesse and subtlety that characterize this wine are matched by its complexity and depth. In Bordeaux’s sea of oft-criticized, overly-expensive, and even over-rated wines, it is refreshing to find a domaine, a château, whose wine is far from banal and whose price point feels comfortable.
