100% Monastrell
2016

Alicante, Spain

I have been enthralled with Bodegas Volver since my visit a few years ago.
Here is the vineyard where this wine comes from, as you can see dry framed and 100% un-grafted Monastrell that dates back to 1935,
planted in the Alicante region of Spain.

That’s not a pyramid in the background but the largest marble quarry in Europe.
It is located near their vineyards, testament to the chalky quality of the soils, which is perfect for the vines. Marble is the product of chalk, or calcium carbonate that has been compressed over a very long period of time.

Many of you enjoy their other wines, Volver single vineyard Tempranillo, Triga Red blend and Paso a Paso.
This little known wine has scored well
 foyears,
in fact, the 2015 vintage was #17 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 in 2017.

91 Points The Wine Spectator

"This bold red wine is intense and expressive.
Cassis and blueberry flavors mingle with cola, cocoa and licorice notes.
Chewy tannins and balsamic acidity amplify the impact.
Heady, ripe and in the modern style Monastrell. Drink now through 2024."

92 Points James Suckling

"Great black fruit that is fully ripe without a hint of overripeness.
This is a big, rich wine. Rather fine and generous tannins help it carry the high-ish alcohol.
Almost silky at the long finish."

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

Traditional dry farmed viticulture, cultivated completely by hand, with minimal human intervention. This is the work of Jorge Ordonez, and his name is synonymous with the best wines of Spain. The style here is ripe & powerful. Cherry color with a hint of intense ruby. In the nose mature fruit, raspberries, blueberries, spices, hints of balsamic and notes of flowers. Tasty in the mouth, balanced and full-bodied. Long finish. Only 7000 cases made.

Rafael Cañizares
The project of Bodegas Volver was founded in 2004 by Rafael Cañizares, enologist through studies and viticulturist through his family tradition of four generations bound to the vine and wine. The pillars of the bodega are based on the repositioning of quality Spanish wines and recovering old indigenous vineyards which, either through low production or lack of generational succession, had been lost.

Our most prized asset is our heritage of vines between 30 and 90 years old, indigenous varieties cultivated in a sustainable way with minimal intervention. We create wines under different denominations of origin; La Mancha, Alicante, Jumilla and Rueda.
