Our Thoughts on this wine.....

This 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is outstanding and has the classic, pure style of the vintage front and center. Revealing a saturated purple color as well as lots of blue fruits, red cherry, chocolate, spring flower, and a hint of earth characteristics. Its medium to full-bodied, has fine tannins, finishing with incredible structure and balance.

About Stags Leap….……

From its perch in the tall grassy slopes of the palisades overlooking the Napa Valley, this property has been a lavish get away for the wealthy and elite.  A fashionable country resort in the mid-twentieth century, popular with Hollywood due to its 1892 stone Manor House and historic gardens, legends of bootleggers and gangsters, ghosts and gypsies, Stags’ Leap has been home to three major family groups up through the modern revitalization of the winery that began in the 1970s.

Stags Leap Manor, as it was called in the 1920s, was known as one of the prominent country retreats in the Napa Valley at a time when resort and spa business was big. In addition to lodging and dining, amenities included lawn tennis, and swimming.

From the Hollywood types of the silver screen, this place has inspired all sorts of legends that swirl, what we do know for certain is that while the estate remains as picturesque as when it was built, winemaking techniques have come a long way. In 1893 Horace Chase, who had made his fortune investing in the gold and silver mines during the California gold rush, embarked in a new venture –winemaking in Napa Valley. Mr. Chase found the perfect volcanic rock and
rich clay soil in which to plant vines and build a home, creating the estate that inspired the Stags Leap appellation.

Horace and Minnie Mizner Chase  owner in the 1880’s, produced the earliest label for Stags’ Leap in 1893, and keeping with the tradition of fine winemaking Christophe Paubert carries the torch today. Working hard to stay informed and on the cutting edge, Christophe stays ahead of the curve, but ultimately Stags’ Leap wines are built from the ground up – with the terroir providing the bulk of integrity and finesse that are ever so evident in the glass.

For Christophe Paubert, Winemaker and General Manager at Stags’ Leap Winery, the identity of a wine is found through the terroir. Christophe’s career has spanned the industry from sales to winemaking, and his impressive background includes positions at Chateau d’Yquem and Gruaud-Larose as well as projects in Chile, Spain and Washington State.

But it was the terroir of Stags’ Leap that drew him to California. “I believe that wine should express the uniqueness of the land, and the Stags’ Leap wines have always showcased one of the most distinctive regions in the Napa Valley.”

The winery is best known for its Petite Syrah, which comes from a handful of very old vines on the estate, as well as its refined and elegant Cabernet Sauvignons.
