Rosso di Montalcino is produced in the same defined zone as Brunello di Montalcino, around the town of the same name in Tuscany, Italy. The DOC was put in place in 1984 order to expedite production from younger vines and plantings, with less aging requirement than Brunello.  Both are made entirely from a local variant of the Sangiovese grape known as Brunello—translated as the "little dark one," referring to the size and color of the grape.  Several important critics have rated this Rosso di Montalcino wine highly.
