Old Vines Mourvedre
Alicante, Spain
2017

Juicy & Complex!

Because you asked….the Mourvedre grape is back on sale for Open Bottle Thursday!

Yes, you loved the Toza Monastrell (Mourvedre) back in early August,
so if you missed it here’s your second chance.
This time for your tasting enjoyment we go back to a familiar winemaker (Rafael Cañizares) from Bodegas Volver,
but it’s the “Old Vines” that makes this bottle sing!

I was at the winery, and in the vineyard, in the spring of 2015.
It was quite impressive.
Little did I know at the time that the 2015 vintage would go on
to be on Wine Spectators 2017 Top 100 number 17!

90 Points Decanter
“A beautiful bruiser with ripe black fruit, leather and spice notes, a lot of wine for the money.
Full bodied with fruit to match the brawny structure.”

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

From old vines and aged 14-16 months in French oak, the 2017 Tarima Hill sports an inky color, as well as a smoky bouquet of black raspberries, blueberries, pepper, and dried flowers.
It's broad, expansive, and sweetly fruited,
with a great mid-palate and sweet tannins.
It's an elegantly sexy fruit bomb!

A bit about Bodegas Volver in their words…..

The project of Bodegas Volver was founded in 2004 by Rafael Cañizares, enologist through studies and viticulturist through his family tradition of four generations bound to the vine and wine. The pillars of the bodega are based on the repositioning of quality Spanish wines and recovering old indigenous vineyards which, either through low production or lack of generational succession, had been lost.

Our most prized asset is our heritage of vines between 30 and 90 years old, indigenous varieties cultivated in a sustainable way with minimal intervention.We create wines under different denominations of origin;
La Mancha, Alicante, Jumilla and Rueda.

Each award and mention of recognition brings satisfaction to our work but what makes us most proud is passing it on to the next generation. Today, Sofia Cañizares, Daughter of Rafael, is preparing to take the generational baton. She is being trained and has very clear ideas, which began with her father, and has already created her own wine under the supervision of her father and mentor.

“My work is to obtain the highest quality,
which begins in the grape and finishes in the bottling of the wines.”

Rafael Cañizares
