2019
Rhone Valley, France
70% Grenache, 30% Syrah

As some of you may know I just returned from a two week French buying trip (35 wineries, 370 wines tasted and reviewed) this is the hard work I have to do to bring great wine to you! I hit every major region and visited both existing producers and a number of new and upcoming selections. Most of what I tasted will be arriving in the coming months, however, I was able to secure a few items that were already in the states or just about to be, this is the first of many new offerings....... A  Baby Châteauneuf-du-Pape!
Remarkable!

2019 Cotes du Rhone les Champauvins is another successful vintage for this perennial overachiever. Mulberries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the full-bodied, softly dusty palate is concentrated and pure, finishing on long-lasting notes of red berries and salted licorice.
This estate and its parent company, Alain Jaume & Fils, have been staples in many American cellars for decades because they consistently combine quality and value. My visit to the estate was highlighted by the opportunity to try the full range on offer and a number of older vintages, which simply reinforced my view that this is one of the Southern Rhône's most important addresses for wine lovers.

"Sourced from a plot just a stone's throw from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Les Champauvins is consistently one of the best Côtes-du-Rhône bottlings available. Heady aromas of lilac and crushed white pepper introduce a palate that's powerful yet pure in fruit, packed with flavors of candied raspberry and strawberry leather. Delicate and dusty in tannins, it finishes long on streaks of salt and anise. Lovely young, the wine should improve through 2029 at least."

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

The Les Champauvins Vineyards property line is adjacent to Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC. You can taste the value in this bottling even at regular pricing.
Intense, brilliant garnet-red color. It reveals lovely fruit, loads of body and a heady bouquet of ground peppers, raspberries, cherry liqueur, currants, and spice box. Medium to full-bodied, rich and elegant - it tastes more like a "baby Châteauneuf". It easily competes with any number of more expensive Châteauneuf-du-Papes and Gigondas. Its great today, yet will keep for 7-8 years

Alain Jaume in their words.....

In the 14th century, during their stay in Avignon, the popes built a papal castle in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Impressed by the area’s exceptional terroir surrounding the castle, Pope Jean XXII planted the first vines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 1320. Interestingly, the wine that gave Châteauneuf-du-Pape its original reputation was the white and not the red. The white wine was a favorite of Pope Innocent VI.

Today the castle is now a historic monument in Avignon, and the papacy is based in Rome’s Vatican City. But still today, the pope’s coat of arms remains on the bottles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the wines are still produced in a similar manner as when the popes first pressed their juice.

Established in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the commune of Orange, the Jaume family has been dedicated to the art of wine growing since 1826. Founded by Mathieu Jaume, the Domaine is now run by the 5th and 6th generations of Jaume: Alain Jaume & his children Christophe, Sébastien, and Hélène.

Historically, Domaine Grand Veneur was known for its white wines, until 1995 when the winery refocused their efforts on the reds. The estate now measures 225 acres and covers four appellations:
Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Côtes-du-Rhône 'Les Champauvins' & Côtes-du-Rhône (Rouge, Blanc & Rosé)
Lirac
Vacqueyras
The Jaume family produces wines from these appellations under the Grand Veneur, Chateau Mazane and Clos des Sixte labels. They also produce wines from the AOC's of Rasteau, Gigondas, Carianne and Ventoux under their Alain Jaume label.
