Colmar, Alsace, France

First class taste on an everyday budget!

Both made with the same fermentation method as.the finest Champagnes, of course!

We have been a fan of Wolfberger since the shop opened
- mostly focusing on their Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.
It wasn’t until Rande's visit earlier this year that we paid more attention to their many Cremants!

“Crémant” is the French term for traditional-method sparkling wines made outside Champagne. This means that the second fermentation, which gives the wine its bubbles, must happen inside the bottle. That’s followed by a minimum aging period of nine months on spent yeast cells, or lees.
This maturation gives the wines their creamy texture.

Champagne is mostly made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay under strict guidelines. Most Crémant d’Alsace is made from sprightly, crisp Pinot Blanc, even though Auxerrois, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are allowed.

In the case of Crémant d’Alsace Rosé, the law requires it to be 100% Pinot Noir.
Some Alsace Crémants are single-varietal wines, while others are blends.
But all exhibit dryness and freshness.

The law does not end there. To guarantee quality, “the parcels of vines destined for Crémant must be identified in March, so the vines are tended for that purpose,” says Thierry Fritsch of the Alsace Wine Council. “Producing grapes for Crémant [must not] be an accident.”

Indeed, the grapes must be treated gently: hand harvested, transported in boxes that prevent crushing and, once in the winery, whole-bunch pressed. Only lightly pressed juice, namely the first 100 liters of each 150 kilograms of grapes, can be used. Considering all this, Crémant d’Alsace presents fantastic value.

 Cremant d'Alsace Brut (Blanc)
90 % Pinot Blanc, 10% Pinot Auxerrois

91 Points  International Wine Review
"Made in the traditional method, this 90/10 blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Auxerrois from Alsace, with a minimum of 12 months on the lees. Showing apple and shortbread on the nose, this Crémant has a lovely creamy, textured mouth feel and firm acidity that combine to offer unusual drinking pleasure in a wine of this price.
If you’re trying to decide whether to buy a Prosecco or spend a few more dollars for this wine,
I’d say go for it!"

Cremant d'Alsace Rose Brut
100 % Pinot Noir

 90 Points The Wine Enthusiast
"Lemon notes shine on the nose of this pink sparkler, accompanied by a hint of red apple.
The frothy palate is dry, slender and fresh.
Something bracing and clean is met by just a little red-apple mellowness.”

Cremant d'Alsace is great as an aperitif, alone or with appetizers;
it is delicious at the dinner table, particularly with seafood, salmon, shellfish, white meat and game,
and will harmoniously adapt to most desserts, and cheese, majestically crowning a meal.
What Crémant lacks in widespread recognition, it more than makes up for in value and food-friendliness.

Wolfberger is a union of producers located in Eguisheim, south of Colmar in Alsace.
The city was also the home of Pope Leo IX, the Reformer (Pope from 1048 – 1054 A.D.).
The winery was founded in 1902 when a group of wine-growers in Eguisheim decided to join forces to create one of the first cooperatives in Alsace. The cave counts 450 members today.
Wolfberger combines tradition and constant innovation to offer high quality wines and preserve their local character.
