A Sangiovese heart, a unique terroir and the distinct Avignonesi signature are the main ingredients for the finest expression of the Avignonesi Vino Nobile, Grandi Annate. Vino Nobile Grandi Annate is the finest expression of Sangiovese from our Montepulciano vineyards. This wine is produced only in the very best years, when the climate brings optimum growing conditions to the vines, permitting the grapes to express all the complexity of the terroir, leading to a wine that is rich in character with the stamina to age for many years. The Winemaker

Everyone I've read about or spoken to has raved about this wine!! Only confirming my own very positive view.
This is one of those special opportunities to pick up a wine that will make you happy for a long time. I've only shown you a sampling of the critical reviews - all between 93 and 100 points!! Personally, this is the type of wine to have with a very fine roast and all the accompaniments - for Anniversary, Birthday, or Christmas - a very special experience that will keep in your cellar for 10-12 years, if you choose. - mike

Accolades

93 / 100 points - The Wine Advocate

You'll notice that this wine is no longer labeled "Riserva." Avignonesi wanted to reduce the time it spends in oak and made the name adjustment accordingly. This seems like a good idea to me. The 2012 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Grandi Annate gives new life to one of Tuscany's most historic wines. There is more elegance and finesse here. I must say that past vintages have been a disappointment, but this expression seems to break all ties with the past. Fruit is sourced primarily from the Banditella vineyard that tends to produce more austere and concentrated Sangiovese. Indeed, this wine is highly redolent of black fruit, tar, licorice and even a touch of white mushroom. Everyone loves a comeback story and that's what you get here. - Monica Larner

------------------

The colour is showing more evolution here. Leaning towards orange, tawny at the rim. Medium-high intensity. The nose is also showing some evolution, with more dried fruity aromas. I would say more traditional style. There is no indication of oak here, the fruitiness is more prune, dried cherry, dried tomatoes with some spicy notes, hint of leather. Classically dry palate. Still with a slightly austere texture. There is a good presence of tannin, that hasn’t fully integrated yet. Quite youthful and fresh acidity. On the finish more attractive fruit, with juicy red cherry and a certain spiciness. In my mind something that should be put back in the cellar to round off the edges a little bit more.

The Winery.....“Healthier wines for healthier people, but also a healthier land
and a healthier environment to pass on to future generations.”

Virginie Saverys

The winery is named after the Avignonesi family, the founders of the original estate.
Constant research and development aimed at expressing the true character of the Montepulciano terroir has, over time, earned the winery a well-deserved place among the flagship producers of Tuscany.

In 2009, Avignonesi was acquired by Virginie Saverys who has since introduced organic and biodynamic farming methods to craft distinct, genuine wines with an even stronger character, and has acquired additional vineyards and a state-of-the-art winemaking facility in the Montepulciano appellation.

We believe that the life force of the earth and the uniqueness of our terroir are at the heart of our brand. Avignonesi is reborn from the soil of our vineyards with each vintage in wines that mirror the subtle flavours of the site and the special traits of each year. Our wines express the richness and beauty of the Montepulciano territory. We respect the heritage of Montepulciano, where Sangiovese wines have been produced for centuries, and we wish to contribute to its future by being the finest representative of its heritage that we can be.

We respect the innate character of each wine and seek to follow its natural evolutionary path from the soil to the cellar and - finally - to the bottle.
 The Winemaker.....
Virginie was born in Ghent, Belgium and graduated in law from the University of Paris in 1983. Virginie was brought up in a family that always enjoyed fine wines and, as a wine lover, decided to invest in the Avignonesi winery in 2007, after having retired from her highly successful legal career and moving to Tuscany. In 2009 she bought the whole of Avignonesi with the intention of taking a winery already recognised for its quality, innovative research and experimentation to a new level of excellence.

She is a strong believer in organic products and homeopathic medicine, so converting the winery to sustainable farming methods was a natural choice. Her aim at Avignonesi is to produce wines which do not only mirror the distinct identity of the terroir of Montepulciano, but wines which are healthier for her customers, healthier for the land and therefore for future generations.
