Bodegas Balbas
ARDAL
Reserva Selection Especial
2010

Ribera del Duero, Spain
80% Tempranillo, 20%Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine reminds me of the 2011 Convento de las Claras Heritage we did a few years ago, intriguing, powerful yet elegant. The 2010 vintage in Ribera del Duero is the best vintage since the turn of the century. Thanks to 60 year old vines and the bottle aging it is just now hitting its peak for your enjoyment.

94 Points!! The Wine Spectator
"This brawny red shows a thick texture, supported by muscular tannins. A bit chewy but with impressive concentration. The savory character offers tar, smoke, sanguine and mineral flavors, with a core of plum and floral that emerges on the finish. Powerful, but remains balanced. Best from 2018 through 2030. 1,500 cases made. –TM."

Our Thoughts.........

A nose that conveys quality, aromas of barrel spice and vanilla lead the charge on this Tinto Fino that also contains 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is medium to full bodied with flavors of spicy dark cherry, wild strawberry, plum with hints of a little leather and campfire (smoke) towards the finish.  Finishes dry and dusty. Drink now through 2025.

A bit about Bodegas Balbas .......

Bodegas Balbás was born  in 1777, and after six generations of winemakers, Juan José Balbás is now the visible head of the cellar and a wine lover. The dedication of this family brought the creation of the Ribera del Duero appellation of origin, with a few number of winemakers of the area.

In the village of La Horra, we produce our wines with the same traditional method as always, adapted to the new age of technology in order to improve our quality.

The secret is the care of our vineyards planted between 711 and 940 meters high and the special characteristics of "the terroir" with limy and chalky soils, poor in organic materials and a PH acidity of about 7.5. The yield, depending on the age of our vines, goes from less than one thousand to five thousand kilograms per hectare, with green pruning and all the traditional attentions necessary to grow healthy and with the personal touch of our wine: deep and intense due to the low production.

Trying to be more unique, without losing the personality or our region, our Balbás wines are constantly improving their body, structure and balance, avoiding long stays in barrels, but finishing in bottles for long periods. The most delicate stage in the life of a great wine is the ageing process in selected high quality French Allier and American Missouri, in a peaceful silence, only disturbed by carefully-timed rakings. For this purpose, the oak for our barrels is selected when it arrives at the coopery to control the drying and toasting according to our very strict necessities.
